One of the most common questions we get about Hypedome is a simple, practical one:

“Are Hypedomes bug-free?”

It’s a fair ask. After all, if you’re setting up a peaceful glamping nook, a backyard chill-out zone, or a garden gym, the last thing you want is an uninvited buzz disrupting your zen.

So let’s clear things up. The short answer? Hypedome is not a hermetically sealed spaceship, and it’s not trying to be. It’s an outdoor structure, designed to offer protection from the elements while still keeping you connected to the surrounding nature – fresh air, natural light, and yes, occasional tiny visitors included.

But that doesn’t mean you’re doomed to a buggy experience. Quite the opposite. Thanks to clever design choices and smart accessories, you can seriously reduce the presence of insects and enjoy your dome in peace.

Let’s take a closer look.

Designed for Airflow, Not Airtight

Let’s start with the basics of how Hypedome is built.

Our domes are made from overlapping polycarbonate panels that interlock like fish scales. This clever design makes them rainproof and wind-resistant – water rolls right off, and gusty days are no problem.

However, these panels do leave tiny micro gaps between them. That’s intentional. These gaps help maintain natural airflow inside the dome, preventing stuffiness and condensation. They’re so small you’ll barely see them, but they do mean that Hypedome is not fully sealed – and that’s perfectly normal for any outdoor structure.

Now, to the real question: what about the bugs?

Minimising Unwanted Guests: Practical Solutions That Work

While you can’t fully insect-proof any outdoor space (not even your house, really), there’s a lot you can do to keep bugs out of your dome – and we’ve designed a few bespoke accessories exactly for that.

Mosquito Screens for Doors and Windows

Want to enjoy fresh air without flying visitors? This is your first line of defense.

Our mosquito screens are custom-designed for Hypedome’s windows and door openings. They’re:

  • Easy to install (no glue, just longer screws or Velcro + magnets)
  • Durable and discreet
  • Fitted to the exact dimensions of your dome

You can keep your windows and doors open, enjoy the breeze, and still block out the bugs. The mesh frames are designed to let you open and close the panels without having to remove the screens – effortless and effective.

Port Door Upgrade: Fast In, Fast Out

The Port Door isn’t just about durability or safety – though it delivers both.

It’s also about efficiency. Compared to the flexible membrane entry, the Port Door is easier to open and close quickly. That means less time with the dome left ajar – and fewer opportunities for insects to sneak in while you’re juggling a yoga mat and a smoothie.

Bonus: it pairs perfectly with mosquito screens for a seriously effective setup.

Floor Options: Block Entry from Below

Insects don’t always fly in – sometimes, they crawl. That’s why sealing the base of your dome is just as important as protecting the entry points. At Hypedome, we offer two smart flooring options, both of which help prevent bugs from sneaking in from below.

Soft Floor: Light and Protective

Soft Floor is a lightweight, flexible floor membrane that attaches to the lower edge of your dome’s interior. It’s secured using Velcro strips and wraps slightly up the walls, creating a neat, continuous barrier around the base.

  • Helps block tiny entry points between ground and dome
  • Quick to install, easy to clean
  • Adds a subtle layer of protection from soil, dust, and insects

It’s not insulated, but it’s ideal for casual use – think: yoga, lounging, garden office. For next-level comfort and protection, though, there’s another option.

Insulated Modular Base: Comfort Meets Control

Looking for a more permanent or year-round solution? Enter the Insulated Modular Base – our premium flooring system, designed for serious glamping, guest space setups, or cold-weather workouts.

It features a multi-layered structure:

  • A waterproof membrane
  • An insulating core
  • A sturdy plywood surface
  • And a perimeter gasket that seals against the dome wall

The result? A level, warm and stable floor that also helps reduce the chance of insects sneaking in from below.

And yes – despite its solid performance, installation is still very much DIY-friendly. No special tools, no contractors – just a bit of time and basic tools.

Natural Insect Repellents: Go Green

Your garden (or patio) can be your dome’s secret weapon.

Placing certain natural insect-repelling plants in pots around or even inside the dome can help create an atmosphere that’s just a little less welcoming – for bugs, that is.

Some fan-favourites:

  • Lavender – smells heavenly to you, terrible to mosquitoes.
  • Mint – adds a refreshing scent and deters ants and flies.
  • Lemongrass – contains citronella oil, a known insect repellent.
  • Geranium – colorful, vibrant, and not very bug-friendly.

Not only do they add to the aesthetic, but they do some light-duty pest control too.

Other Smart Habits for a Bug-Lite Dome Life

Even with all the above in place, a few good habits go a long way:

  • Close the door behind you – especially around dusk, when insects are most active.
  • Dim the lights – our table lamps and perimeter LED strip lights are dimmable. Lower light levels attract fewer bugs (and make the mood even better).
  • Avoid leaving food exposed – picnics are great, but even crumbs invite guests you didn’t RSVP.

So… Are Hypedomes Bug-Free?

Not entirely – and we wouldn’t promise that. But here’s the truth:

Hypedome is thoughtfully engineered to minimise insect presence while maintaining all the benefits of being in nature. And with the right setup – mesh screens, floor options, and a few smart add-ons – you can create a cozy, airy, and almost bug-free zone.

No buzzing. No biting. Just you, your dome, and the outdoors – on your terms.
