Rain or Shine: Exploring the Rainproof Properties of Geodomes

By Sarah Gill inDining Dome, Garden Room, Glamping Pod

We often get asked if our geodomes are rainproof. While rain is vital for much of life on Earth, it isn’t always wanted. The good news is, rain doesn’t have to stop play (unless you’re playing cricket, in which case – grab a sandwich, it’s time for a tea break!). With a Hypedome geodesic dome you can still have those friends over for a drink in the garden, do yoga with a view or meditate surrounded by nature.

Rain falling on the waterproof Hypedome garden dome

There are many types of geodomes out there, each with its own materials and construction methods. We can’t vouch for any others but we know that when assembled correctly our domes are 100% rainproof. So, let’s take a closer look at why you can trust Hypedomes to keep you dry in any weather.

Waterproof Geodesic Dome Materials

Geodomes come in a variety of materials; glass, PVC and polycarbonate being the most popular. Hypedomes are made from polycarbonate panels. They’re incredibly light, durable and 100% waterproof. We use stainless steel components to connect the tiles. These hold the panels tightly together, ensuring no rain can enter, but still allowing some natural ventilation.

Unique Hypedome Construction and Set Up

We all know how the scales of fish have a slippery and smooth texture that allows water to flow over them effortlessly. That inspired us to emulate our fishy friends when designing the Hypedomes. Our geodomes are constructed just like fish scales. Each hexagonal panel overlaps the next down to the ground, meaning water simply flows over the structure and runs away, even in windy conditions. You can sit inside and listen to the raindrops falling, without getting a single drop on you.

To seal the dome from the ground, you can choose from two custom-made flooring systems: the Soft Floor Membrane and the Insulated Modular Base. Using one of these options together with Hypedome creates a secure, rainproof den in your garden. The best bit is the flooring can be retrofitted, so if you decide you want to add it to your geodome after a year or two, you can do it easily. The combination of fish-scale design, polycarbonate construction and a fitting floor ensures that no rain can seep in, keeping you cosy and dry no matter what the weather throws at you.

Specially Designed Windows and Doors

Hypedome Window Panels are specifically designed to allow you to enjoy your dome even on rainy days. You can now unwind, work or exercise inside all year round, with the fresh air flowing in. The windows are ingeniously tilted, so you can ventilate the dome without worrying about rainwater making an appearance.

Hypedome doors are all fully waterproof when closed. Our standard membrane Roll Door is just the beginning – you can also choose from Port Door or Nest Door for a more solid solution. These doors are designed with ease of use in mind, so you can quickly and effortlessly dash in from the rain without creating a flood inside.

Condensation in Geodomes and How to Avoid It

Water doesn’t have to come from outside. It’s important to note that even though our domes are rainproof, they may still get a bit humid inside, and condensation is completely natural. But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! Check out our post on reducing condensation for some handy tips.

A rainbow over a rainproof geodome

If you love nature but hate getting wet, Hypedome might just be the solution you’ve been looking for. With polycarbonate panels, fish-scale-like construction and a sealed base you can enjoy the beauty of the outdoors while staying cosy and dry inside. Come rain or shine, Hypedomes keep the weather out and the adventure in!
