This time we journey to the bustling streets of Amsterdam with Omar Ramirez, who has transformed his seldom-used rooftop into an Airbnb hotspot and a wellness retreat called the Amsterdome, which offers stunning views and a unique escape from the urban hustle.
Q: We're excited to have you with us today, Omar. Could you share how you use your Hypedome and the story behind it?
Omar: I’ve always been passionate about breathwork and meditation and wanted to find a way to utilize my seldom-used rooftop. After looking into various options, I decided to create a unique Airbnb experience right there on my roof. Opting for a dome was a big leap, but it has totally revolutionized what I can offer. It’s not just an Airbnb hotspot; it’s also a retreat for breathwork sessions and therapies. Waking up to the incredible views of the Rijksmuseum and the Amsterdam skyline has our guests in awe.
Q: It sounds great! Looking back, do you feel the investment in the dome was worthwhile?
Omar: Oh, absolutely! It truly paid off quicker than I expected – achieving full ROI in less than six months was really encouraging, especially since it was winter. Now with spring in full swing, I’m thrilled to see the dome fully booked for the next few months. Initially, I charged a modest rate per night, but as the spot became more popular, I could double the rate easily. The breathwork sessions have become a real hit, and it’s exciting to think this could become my full-time job one day. It’s been a fantastic journey so far!
Q: How has your approach to hosting guests evolved since you started?
Omar: October 21st was my first guest. Initially, I aimed to attract as many guests as possible by keeping prices low. However, I soon decided to elevate the experience by raising the prices and enhancing the amenities and elevating this space. Following these changes, positive reviews started coming in quickly. Now, the dome has become a favorite among guests, and it’s often featured on the main pages of listings. I’ve found that even with higher prices, the demand remains strong because guests truly enjoy their stay.
Q: Was it your idea to start this business?
Omar: Yes, it was. Initially, my wife was skeptical – she asked ‘What are you going to do on the roof? You’re putting what up there?’ Now, she loves it. Everyone thought I was a bit off the wall at first, but now they’re all interested in it and asking, ‘How did you set it up?’
Q: So you travelled all the way from being called crazy to being considered a genius?
Omar: [Laughs] Exactly, from ‘crazy’ to ‘genius’ – that’s how they see it now!
Q: How did you come up with the idea for the dome?
Omar: Living in Amsterdam, the weather can really limit how much I use my rooftop – maybe 10 to 15 days a year if I’m lucky, due to the heat, wind, or rain. I knew I needed some sort of cover, so I started looking around. Initially, I considered a cheaper option just to try it out, but the Hypedome team’s responsiveness really stood out and convinced me to go with you guys. You answered all my questions immediately and supported me with your expertise, which was great.
Q: What makes the Amsterdome experience special for your guests?
Omar: The dome’s blend of aesthetics and function really sets it apart. I chose the Hypedome with a mirror and clear finish because I wanted it to blend seamlessly with the surroundings. Inside, it’s furnished with a luxury bed and surrounded by sustainable wool rocks. Guests can enjoy exceptional teas – not just ordinary ones – served from a SMEG kettle. For warmth, there’s a heater designed to look like a fireplace. All those details make the space unique, beautiful and luxurious.
I envision the dome as a meditation and recharge space. Many come here seeking a romantic getaway but find themselves embracing the opportunity for deeper meditation and self-discovery. It’s a place where guests can think about important life decisions – whether it’s deciding on a career move, expressing love, or simply finding peace within themselves. It’s this blend of introspection and luxury that really defines the experience we offer.
Q: So it’s a place to disconnect, be with oneself, and contemplate life’s big questions?
Omar: Exactly, it’s about disconnecting. Being on the roof lets people step away from their daily grind and see things from a new perspective, and they’re always amazed by it.
Q: Can you share more about the cold shower experience on your rooftop?
Omar: Certainly! It’s based on the Wim Hof Method, from whom I learned about two years ago. The method emphasizes overcoming our inherent fears – like the fear of cold – and it’s transformative. Wim Hof talks about getting “high on your own supply,” meaning you don’t need substances to feel good; natural methods like cold showers can significantly boost your mood by releasing endorphins. It’s a powerful way to start feeling amazing and it’s a practice we’re excited to share with our guests at the Amsterdome. However, if you don’t feel like trying it we provide full access to our home amenities, and all guests are welcome to use our living spaces.

Q: Sounds inviting! How about your guests - do you have any memorable experiences?
Omar: We’ve hosted guests from around the world, but one particularly memorable visitor for me was a paramedic from Australia. She initially booked for just two nights but was so captivated by the peaceful environment that she extended her stay to a full week. Working in such a high-stress job, she carried a lot of emotional weight, and our daily breathwork sessions and staying at the dome offered her a much-needed sanctuary to unwind and let go. This experience reinforced for me how impactful this space can be.
Q: Is Hypedome what you expected it to be, especially being located in such a windy place?
Omar: Definitely, Hypedome transformed my rooftop into a year-round hangout spot. It’s a life changer. And it proved itself extremely sturdy. We’ve experienced hurricane winds reaching up to 120 kilometers per hour (about 75 miles per hour), and it has weathered these perfectly.
Q: Looking ahead, what are your plans for the future?
Omar: I’m excited to enhance the Amsterdome experience further, exploring new ways to integrate wellness and relaxation. We’re also thinking about potential expansions. Seeing how well things have gone, I’m eager to explore developing my first Amsterdome into more ‘Amsterdomes.’ My dome isn’t just a structure; it’s a true recharge space, and I look forward to seeing how it can continue to inspire others.
