Stephen Tulley, Samadhi Hypedome Owner
Q: Stephen, congratulations on the incredible reviews for your Airbnb dome, Samadhi Hypedome! Can you share what inspired you to create this retreat?
Stephen: Thank you! Samadhi is a Hindu term that represents inner peace or nirvana. I wanted to create a space where people could find a bit of that peace for themselves. With Samadhi Hypedome, the goal is to provide a meditative experience in nature. The M-size Hypedome Opal itself is not too big but has everything you need – a cozy bed, a warm fire, and these lovely sheepskin rugs. When you’re inside, you’re like in a cocoon, completely insulated from the elements outside. It’s an incredible feeling to watch the world happen around you – wind, rain, anything – but feel entirely calm and sheltered within the dome.
I also offer a complimentary soundbowl meditation for guests, which most people are keen to try. It’s about encouraging that inward journey into stillness and reflection. I think that experience of finding peace and joy within themselves is what stays with people long after they leave Samadhi Hypedome.
Q: That sounds amazing! So you’ve got a strong background in yoga and meditation?
Stephen: Yes, I’ve been involved in that world for quite a while. I’ve been visiting a local ashram here in the Bay Area for years, which is actually how I ended up relocating here. I had a business down on the South Island, but I was drawn to this area for its peacefulness and the ashram community. It’s where I first learned about soundbowl meditation and practices like that.
Q: It sounds like the perfect location for your dome. How did you decide to start an Airbnb there?
Stephen: It just seemed like a natural progression. I found this beautiful property in the top northwest corner of the South Island – it’s a bit remote, but that’s part of the appeal. The weather can get wild, we get around 3-4 meters of rain a year, but that creates this lush, dense bushland. It’s stunning, really. The isolation, the raw beauty of the area – it felt like the perfect place to offer a retreat like this.
Q: You’ve had quite the weather experiences yourself in the dome, right?
Stephen: Oh yeah! The first night I stayed in the dome was a real adventure. I’d just set it up in late summer, and I was camping out in my sleeping bag when a huge electrical storm hit. Thunders, flashes of lightning, it was pretty crazy. But the dome held up incredibly well, and it was such a surreal experience being in that storm but feeling sheltered.
Q: That must have been wild! Who are your typical guests at Samadhi Hypedome?
Stephen: I get a mix of people. Some are locals, others come from further afield. I had two women from Switzerland and Denmark who helped me assemble the dome – it was such a fun, collaborative project. Most guests stay for just one night, but I’m starting to get bookings for longer stays, especially in January and February when people really want to soak in the beauty of the South Island for a few days.
Q: And you’re open all year round, even through winter?
Stephen: Yes, I decided to keep it open year-round, even though winter can be quieter for international tourists. I had a glamping stove installed in the dome, and that adds a cozy atmosphere – people love it, especially when it’s chilly outside. It’s proving really popular with locals too.
Q: How competitive is the Airbnb market in your area?
Stephen: It’s definitely competitive, but I think the Samadhi Hypedome stands out because of its unique setup and the high quality of the glamping dome itself. There are other domes around, but Hypedome offers a level of craftsmanship and comfort that’s hard to beat. I’ve found that the dome’s panoramic views and peaceful atmosphere are a big draw for guests.
Q: Speaking of views, I hear your dome has a hot tub too?
Stephen: It does, and it’s a hit! Especially in winter. People love relaxing in the hot tub after a day of exploring. I’ve also got plans to install a sauna before next winter, which I think will be a great addition to the retreat.
Q: Sounds like the perfect setup. Do you offer any other activities for guests?
Stephen: Yes, I take guests on kayaking trips around the local lagoons and share some of the area’s history and wildlife. It offers a different perspective, seeing the land from the water. The Abel Tasman area around here is just breathtaking. Summer will be busy for sure, but it’s all about helping people connect with nature and themselves.
Q: What’s the general reaction from guests when they first step into the dome?
Stephen: Honestly, people are blown away. The most common reaction when I open the door is “My Goodness!” – especially when they arrive in the evening and the dome is all lit up with soft lights and the fire going. It’s a magical atmosphere, and when people feel that sense of wonder, it makes it all worthwhile for me.
Q: I’ve seen your reviews with an average rating of 5.0! Everyone seems thrilled with their stay. How has your experience been with Hypedome as a product?
Stephen: It’s been fantastic. The logistics of getting the dome delivered halfway around the world were impressive – I don’t know how you managed it, but it arrived perfectly! And in terms of the product itself, it’s exceeded my expectations. We get gusts of wind over 100 km/h here, and the dome stands strong. I’d give it 11 out of 10 for durability!

Q: Would you recommend Hypedome to other Airbnb hosts?
Stephen: Definitely. In fact, I’m already thinking about getting another one. I’ve got some big native trees on the property, and I have this idea of building a platform in the trees for a second dome. The Hypedome has been such a great investment, both financially and personally. It’s not just about the financial return but also the interactions with guests. There’s something special about providing a space that brings people joy, and that’s what makes it all worthwhile.
Q: That sounds like an incredible experience for both you and your guests. Do you think you’ll see a quick return on your investment?
Stephen: Absolutely. The financial return is already looking promising with the bookings coming in steadily, but for me, it’s not just about the money. The real reward comes from seeing how much people enjoy their time here. They leave with a smile, and that means a lot to me. So yes, I’m confident the return will come quickly, but it’s the fulfillment from hosting that makes it even better.
